Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod and Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, Inc. Announce Affiliation

Organizations align to increase efficiencies and community benefits

HYANNIS – Oct. 7th, 2010 – Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod (HPCCC) and Alzheimer’s Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, Inc. (ASCCI) today announced a formal affiliation agreement between the two, long-standing service organizations. As a result of the agreement, ASCCI will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of HPCCC, with each organization retaining its individual identity, mission, corporate name, 501(c)(3) designation, staff and board of directors.  The affiliation creates opportunities to increase efficiencies and sustainability, and to expand and enhance services, including hospice access, available to the estimated 10,000 patients and their caregivers living in the Cape and Islands region with Alzheimer’s or related dementias.
ASCCI was established in 1985 with a mission to provide information, support and training to individuals who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, and the families and professionals who care for them. HPCCC was founded in 1981 with a mission to enhance the comfort and quality of life for patients and families experiencing the impact of serious illness and loss. Both organizations are widely regarded as regional pioneers and leaders in their field.
Alisa Galazzi, Executive Director of ASCCI, said, “We are thrilled to be aligning our two like-minded organizations with shared traditions of commitment to our patients and their families, donors, and the communities we serve. We will continue to build upon our twenty-five year service record, while joining forces with HPCCC to enhance our individual and collective value to our communities.”
David Rehm, President and CEO of HPCCC stated, “This affiliation is a natural step for us, one that is consistent with our mission and our strategic vision to both increase access to hospice care, and to serve a broader population -- including those with chronic conditions.  Together, we have an opportunity to creatively collaborate to develop new types of services, to leverage resources, and to better address an underserved population. Through this kind of thoughtful strategic growth, we can reach a level of critical mass that will enable us to serve patients, families and healthcare professionals in new ways.”
ASCCI will relocate its staff and executive operations to the headquarters of HPCCC in Hyannis. By sharing administrative and logistical resources, the affiliation will reduce back office overhead and costs to better utilize charitable dollars. Each organization will continue to fundraise independently, eliciting the generous support of its respective donors and sponsors to support its unique programs and needs. Stated Rich Brothers, President of the Cape and Islands United Way, “This is an excellent example of two, local not-for-profit leaders coming together to enrich their collective value to the community, while increasing operational efficiencies.”
The closing of the transaction is subject to successful completion of due diligence and the approval of the state Attorney General’s office. The closing is expected to occur in early November with an effective date of January 1, 2011.
