HYANNIS – Dec. 17th, 2010 – Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod (HPCCC) is pleased to announce that Carol Sim has joined the organization as their new Chief Operating Officer. HPCCC is the region’s largest independent, non-profit hospice provider, founded in 1981. Through its recent expansion, the organization now serves six counties, spanning Provincetown to Boston and Martha’s Vineyard.
“I am very excited about joining this visionary and innovative organization,” Sim said in a recent interview. “I had an inside look by being on their advisory council for the past several years and have been very impressed with the strategic acumen, enthusiasm and commitment of their leadership team. And they have a mission I can fully embrace.”
Sim had her interest in hospice sparked back in the 1970s, when she was first a rehab nurse at Yale/ New Haven Hospital and later when she became CEO of a VNA in the New Haven area. One of the founders of Connecticut Hospice, the first hospice in the United States, was a family friend.
“I was always drawn to their work,” she says. “And given all the recent conversations around health care reform, I think hospice will be even more integral as we look for better ways of caring for patients. Chronic disease management in the community will be where the action is going to be in the future.”
Sim stepped down in September after seven years as President and CEO of the Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands (RHCI), following the decision to integrate RHCI’s management and governance structure with other institutions in the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network. The Cape Cod Times recently called Sim “one of a handful of the most influential people on the Cape over the past decade”. Under her leadership, RHCI offered cutting-edge programs and received numerous awards.
Sim, who is a registered nurse with a Masters Degree in Nursing from Columbia University, is on the board of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, is a corporator of Cape Cod Cooperative Bank, and on the Board of Advisors of Shepley Wood Products. She previously served on the boards of the Cape Symphony Orchestra, the Consumer Assistance Council, the Cape Cod Technology Council and the Community Leadership Institute, for which she received the organization's Cape Cod Leadership award in 2005. This fall, she was selected as the Woman of Achievement by the Business and Professional Women of Mid Cape Cod. Sim and her husband live in East Dennis and are avid boaters.
Simultaneously with Sim’s appointment, HPCCC’s Vice President for Clinical Operations, Susan Strauss, was promoted to the newly created position of Chief Compliance Officer, allowing Strauss to focus on the enhancement and expansion of educational programs, with responsibility for compliance, regulatory affairs, education and quality.
HPCCC President and CEO David Rehm said, “It is an honor and a privilege to have Carol Sim join our organization and continue to build on her legacy of leadership here. The position Carol is assuming was created to allow us to manage our rapid growth and to expand on service lines in the future. We look forward to her participation in shaping the future of health care to meet the unique needs of our region.”
