Why Hospice?

More than 90% of Americans report in surveys that they would prefer to die at home. Yet the great majority of us die in hospital settings, away from the comfort of our own family environment. The hospice concept was created to enable all to have the choice of peace, comfort and dignity. First established by Dame Cicely Saunders in England, then brought to the U.S. in 1972, it’s a model that has been replicated worldwide by many different organizations. Patients in hospice are assured state-of-the-art pain control and symptom management, enabling the best possible quality of life.

What is Hospice?

“Hospice” is a model of comfort, compassion-based care, and support for terminally ill patients and their families, which is provided wherever you live. Hospice focuses on caring, not curing. It emphasizes quality of life, helping patients live fully with the most comfort for as long as possible. Hospice neither hastens nor prolongs death. Hospice services attend to the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and families with a unique team approach that brings in a wide range of resources and disciplines.
