Does Hospice only care for cancer patients?
Hospice is not just for cancer patients. H&PCCC cares for patients with any life-limiting illness. Among the illnesses our patients have had are cardiac and respiratory diseases, renal disease, and neurological illnesses including Alzheimer’s disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, AIDS, cirrhosis, and others.
Is Hospice only for Housebound or bed-ridden people?
Hospice is not only for those who are housebound or bed-ridden; most are living their day-to-day lives. Care is given where ever the patient lives; in their home, long-term care facilities, assisted living or retirement communities, rest homes and hospitals. Or at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich, our state-of-the art patient residence.
When Hospice care comes in the patient will die faster?
Hospice neither hastens nor prolongs death. It focuses on helping the patients live fully and comfortably until they die. Hospice does not mean giving up hope. There is much that can be done during this time when you need that most support and care. The earlier the referral, the more effectively we can manage your symptoms and pain.
Is it true that hospice is where you go when there is nothing else to be done?
Hospice is the “something else” that can be done for the patient and family when illness becomes life limiting. It is a model of comfort and compassion-based care and support.
Hospice only provides care and support for the patient?
Hospice care is designed to support the entire family. H&PCCC offers bereavement services for up to a year following the passing of a loved one, providing counseling and support.
