CAPE COD TIMES The final human right Keep end-of-life counseling in health care reform September 01, 2009 2:00 AM Some opponents of health care reform have zeroed in on a provision that would provide taxpayer money to doctors who offer end-of-life counseling. Somehow, the provision has been misrepresented by some as an attempt by the government to impose euthanasia. As a result, some senators have abandoned support for end-of-life counseling. Shame on them. Consider the experience of one family who found end-of-life counseling extremely valuable.

Underutilization of hospice services is a public policy issue. Hospice has a public relations problem. In short, hospice is not about dying; it's about living in dignity surrounded by a caring team of professionals. In fact, hospice actually increases life expectancy. Unfortunately, because of myths and misconceptions about hospice, too many patients and their families fail to take advantage of this underutilized service — a generous benefit granted under Medicare, Medicaid and most private health insurance plans.
To make communication between loved ones easier, the organization has become an official sponsor of a patient blog service called CarePages.
